The Attraction to Horror

Even at a young age, I was attracted to strange and creepy things. I remember watching The Nightmare on Elm Street way younger than I should have and having a love/hate relationship with it. I couldn’t get enough, but it also gave me nightmares (hehe). What is it about creepy things that keep us coming back for more?

Some people enjoy watching/reading horror and going to scary places for the adrenaline rush. This can be compared to people who love rollercoasters or skydiving. An experience to get their heart racing and get a high on life.

For others it can be about confronting their fears. If they’re scared of clowns, they can watch the move It and stare their fear in the face. Although, I don’t recommend the new version for this. I’m not even scared of clowns, but that one was pretty disturbing. Similarly, you can use the horror movie or book as a way to push yourself through a scary situation and be in control of it to prove to your mind that you can come out the other side unscathed.

Horror lovers also have a strong sense of community. No other genre (aside from romance maybe) has such a strong and passionate following. People who love horror come together to compare their fears and their experiences. This is another great way to feel better about your fears – knowing you’re not alone.

Personally, I’m in the adrenaline camp. I love being scared. I will be on the edge of my seat, peaking through my fingers at a scary movie, ready to jump. What is it about horror that draws you in? I’d love to hear from you in a comment 🙂
